St. Louis Mercantile Library at UM-St. Louis

The Mercantile Library is the oldest library west of the Mississippi. From its founding in 1846 by civic leaders and philanthropists it has formed an extensive collection of artwork, artifacts, archives and manuscripts related to St. Louis, the state of Missouri and the history of Western Expansion. Recent special exhibits have highlighted art of the Midwest, the history of the Missouri wine industry, the railroad in art, and life and culture along the Mississippi River.

Programs:
Fine Print and Paper Arts Fair held annually in May; Artists' Panel Discussion held annually in September; Lunch and Lecture Series first Monday of each month September - May;

Fully accessible

Collections:
Paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and sculpture by artists working in and around the state of Missouri; artifacts related to river and railroad industries nationwide; western travel books; Americana; regional and national newspapers.
