Towe Auto Museum

The Towe Auto Museum exhibits over 170 classic automobiles from the late 1800's to current. All makes and models are displayed along with historical relevance.

Collections:
The Towe Auto Museum is a spacious 72,000 square foot Museum, home to over 150 vehicles of various makes and models. Cars on exhibit range from the early 1900s to modern day and are all uniquely displayed chronologically among exhibits befitting the times and changes of the automobile. A knowledgeable docent staff provides visitors with guided tours through exhibits that recreate the love affair we have with automobiles and momentum. Exhibits also provide historical information about the automotive industry.  The mission of the Towe Auto Museum is to educate and entertain while preserving and promoting the automobile and its influence on our lives.

Programs:
2009 Quarterly Exhibits:

Red Lights and Sirens: Vintage Emergency Vehicles --- January 10, 2009 – April 4, 2009
On exhibit, fire and ambulance vehicles that span the first three decades of the 20th century, from an 1894 horse drawn wagon to a 1930 fire engine. The exhibit includes five fire fighting vehicles and two ambulances. Each vehicle served a different purpose; together they present a broad view of emergency response vehicles from the beginning of the automobile age.

Pedals and Metal: The History of the Bicycle --- February 1, 2009 – March 13, 2009
This exhibit coincides with the much anticipated bicycle race, the AMGEN Tour of California, and will illustrate the evolution of the bicycle with unique designs from the early 1900s, to pre-war designs, to bikes of today.

Livin’ Lowrider: Stylin’ in the Streets --- April 2009 – June 2009
This exhibit showcases a variety of lowriders from various local car clubs, illustrating that lowriding is more than just going “low and slow.” The detailed designs, intricate paint jobs, and custom accessories are not only a means of artistic expression but also a medium to express camaraderie and build a sense of community. This exhibit will demonstrate how lowriding has become its own unique genre and subculture within the car hobby and is much more than just about the car you drive.

Carved Elegance: Woodies, Wheels, and Waves --- July 2009 – September 2009
Wood on wheels never looked quite as good as the combination that produced the designed and stylish Woodie. From the Model T Depot Hack, to the equivalent of today’s family mini-van, to the California surfer’s favorite mode of transportation, Woodies have had a significant impact on the world of automobiles. This exhibit will feature of variety of Woodies and allow visitors to reminisce about their personal experiences with Woodies, wheels and waves.

Hearses: The Last Rides --- October 2009 – December 2009
Just in time for Halloween – experience a variety of hearses from around the world! International rituals surrounding the burial of the deceased vary greatly, including the design of ceremonial transport vehicles. From plain and simple to intricate and ornate, hearses on exhibit will illustrate the cultural variety involved in the design and styling of the last rides

Wheelchair accessible, the Towe Auto Museum is located at 2200 Front Street, Sacramento, just south of Old Sacramento and north of Broadway.
