Description:
Judd Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to maintain and preserve the late artist Donald Judd's (1928-1994) permanently installed living and working spaces, libraries, and archives in New York and Marfa, Texas. The Foundation wishes to appoint a Conservator who will be based in Marfa to oversee the long-term preservation of the collection that is permanently installed and in storage. The collection is comprised of a wide range of organic/inorganic objects including sculpture, paintings, furniture, glass, ceramics, books, paper, textiles and ethnographic objects.

The conservator will oversee artwork approved for loan, including assessment, treatment, condition reports, and related travel; conduct preservation activities including environmental monitoring of storage and exhibit areas; assist with architectural preservation projects in Marfa; conduct research on the materials and techniques of Donald Judd and other artists represented in the collection; recruit and supervise interns; prepare and manage budgets, and organize, maintain, and purchase lab equipment. The conservator will appoint and provide oversight of specialist conservation consultants, and advise collections staff on the proper care and maintenance of the collection.

The conservator will report to the Executive Director and to an advisory committee that was established by the Judd Foundaiton in 2005. The Advisory Committee for Conservation & Restoration (ACCR) meets three times a year and is comprised of conservators with extensive experience in treating works of art by Donald Judd, and former studio assistants to Judd who have first and knowledge of his working practice. The Committee advises Judd Foundation on developing appropriate collections management policies and procedures for the Foundation's spaces and the works in its collection

Requirements:
A master's degree from a recognized art conservation program is required, along with substantial practical experience and the ability to undertake innovative treatments. Demonstrated experience in the treatment of modern and contemporary art is preferable. The successful candidate will have excellent writing and verbal skills. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to plan and schedule independent work are essential.
