Position: Managing Director
Status: Exempt, Full Time, Salaried Reports to: The Board of Trustees Collaborates with: Director of Curatorial Affairs/Artistic Director
Direct Reports: Director of Development, Director of Marketing & Public Relations, Operations Manager, Controller and Retail Store Manager
Position Overview:
In collaboration and communication with the Board of Trustees and the Director of Curatorial Affairs/Artistic Director (AD), the Managing Director will direct and oversee the implementation of the Museum's mission and vision by managing the daily operations of the Museum and the annual Bellevue Arts Museum artsfair, including financial, strategic and fund development aspects. The Managing Director will serve as a public representative of the Museum.
Responsibilities:
• Management/Financial Oversight/Strategic Planning
• Manages fund development, marketing, public relations, finance, administration, facility and retail operations.
• Ensures that annual operational plans are created and that all administrative program objectives are met.
• Performs the Museum's human resources function and provides guidance as appropriate. Hires, terminates, trains, cross trains and evaluates staff in accordance with BAM's policies, procedures and in compliance with state & federal law and, when appropriate, in collaboration with AD.
• Leads the annual budgeting process, working with AD, Controller, senior staff and appropriate Board Committees to submit for Board Approval in a timely fashion.
• Provides regular financial reports and analysis to the Board and/or the Finance Committee and takes actions necessary to maintain the financial goals of BAM.
• Ensures the highest level of reporting accuracy, transparency and operational conduct.
• Reviews all contracts and similar legal documents in accordance with Museum policy and when appropriate seeks legal counsel.
• Recognizes potential issues and opportunities that will affect BAM's stability and sustainability and is proactive in responding or making recommendations to the Board.
Fund Development and Museum Representation
• Works with the Director of Development and Development Committee to establish fund development targets (annual, capital and endowment, as necessary) and a plan for reaching those targets.
• In partnership with the AD, Director of Development and the Board, serves as key, visible and effective representative of the organization in making requests for support to individuals, foundations, corporations and the public sector.
• Increases and sustains the funding base and builds long term relationships with key donors in all sectors.
• In partnership with the AD, serves as a primary representative and spokesperson for BAM.
• Takes advantage of all media opportunities as established by the marketing department, engages in public speaking opportunities and is present at all appropriate public functions.
• Ensures that BAM has established clear and effective message platforms.
• Establishes relationships with key individuals in local, regional and state government, other not-for-profit agencies, and with the community at large, locally, regionally and nationally, to enhance and further BAM's presence and recognition.
Board Relations
• In addition to regular reports, brings all appropriate issues and policy requirements to the Board in a timely fashion.
• Partners with the Board President to ensure that the Board and staff are cohesively working to support the established strategic direction of BAM.
Qualifications:
1. Education
• Possession of a bachelor's degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred.
2. Work Experience & Skills
• A minimum of seven years of senior management experience working for a non-profit organization in the arts field is preferred.
• Proven leadership, administrative, analytical and strategic planning skills.
• Effective communicator with the ability to work with a wide range of people including staff, board, government representatives, business leaders, artists, donors and volunteers. Capability to speak publicly about the Museum's mission.
• Problem solver with ability to build and manage teams, delegate authority and develop employee talents. Experience with personnel-related issues including hiring, terminations, contracts and federal & state employment laws.
• Financial acumen and experience to ensure financial stability and strategic growth. Includes experience leading an institution-wide budget process to completion in a timely manner and providing ongoing monitoring of financial performance and measuring against approved budgets.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising and community outreach with expertise in crafting public and private partnerships.
