The Museum of Man is a 95-year-old anthropology museum located in San Diego's Balboa Park. The Museum of Man's mission is:

Education is at the forefront of the Museum's mission. We emphasize the science of human physical adaptation to environments as well as the artistic expression of unique cultures through time and space. Each year, our programs communicate an understanding of cultural and physical anthropology, archaeology, evolution, and other science-related topics to the community.
The Director of Public Programs will develop, implement, evaluate, and manage the Museum's exhibits and educational/public programs. This position participates as a member of the senior management team and works closely with other departments to set educational and interpretative goals and fulfill the institution's mission.
Responsibilities:
Working with staff, management, the Board's Program Committee and the community, sets direction, philosophy, goals and objectives for the Museum's exhibits and educational/ public programs.
• Develops and implements new exhibits, workshops, tours, outreach programs and public programs.
• Oversees all grant-funded educational programs, including School in the Park program.
• Collaborates with grant writers to generate grant proposals to support exhibits and educational/public programs.
• Oversees the design and development of educator resources such as outreach kits, website lessons plans, interactive website pages.
• Represents the Museum to the Balboa Park community and the community at large.
• Working with exhibit designers and curators, develops interpretative/educational/interactive components for exhibits.
• Evaluates Museum educational and cultural programs and exhibit components to optimize museum visitor experience.
• Manages staff, docent and volunteer departmental activities and projects.
Educational Requirements:
Required graduate degree in anthropology with an emphasis on education; graduate work in museum studies a plus. Necessary professional experience and skills include teaching in a museum environment; demonstrated leadership skills; development of educational/cultural programs for a wide variety of age groups from children through adults; development of web-based teaching tools; ability to work independently and with a variety of audiences; exhibit planning and design; public speaking.
