Description:
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is Canada's newest national museum, scheduled to open in 2012 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. An "idea museum" with a strong focus on innovation, this institution is mandated to explore the subject of human rights with special but not exclusive reference to Canada, in order to enhance the public's understanding, promote respect for others and encourage reflection and dialogue.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Research, Content & Scholarship, is the primary authority on the Museum's key subject matter, human rights Responsible for planning, directing and monitoring the museum's research, content and scholarship, this position works collaboratively in a highly interactive, technology-rich environment. The Director leads research on human rights and related issues for the purpose of generating original content and information that will be showcased at the CMHR in order to enhance the public's understanding of human rights, promote respect for others and encourage reflection and dialogue. This position oversees the acquisition, organization and maintenance of a core collection of information resources and other specialized collections (data files, photographs and video, other digital media), and is responsible for the library and research centre. Reporting to the COO, the Director is a key member of the CMHR senior management team, responsible for setting policy and strategic direction and providing leadership to staff. Leadership responsibilities include financial management, public relations, and representing the museum with the community, Board, and other museums.
Educational Requirements:
Required:A Master's degree in an appropriate discipline (Human Rights, history, cultural studies, museum studies, or another area of specialty) or an acceptable equivalency
Desired: A PhD degree in an appropriate discipline
Skills:
Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of museology as they apply to applied research and dissemination of related information, the acquisition of objects and the development of collections
• Extensive experience in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of complex museological research projects, publications, and exhibitions development
• Demonstrated ability to skilfully work with controversial subject matter and present conflicting or divergent points of view
• Significant management experience, including financial and human resources management, formulation of policies, strategic goals and objectives
• Experience negotiating and developing partnerships at the national and international levels
• Demonstrated superior communication skills: written and oral, including experience preparing and delivering presentations
• Proven ability to delivery results under tight timelines and on budget
