Description:
The Walker Art Center—a multidisciplinary art center places equal emphasis on the visual, performing, and media arts of our time and consistently presents artists who are defining the 21st century and actively connecting its audiences with the aesthetics, ideas, and social implications of contemporary art.
The Walker seeks an experienced full-time senior-level Director of Marketing and Public Relations to provide creative, strategic leadership in marketing and promoting the Center and its diverse program. The Director is a vital member of the senior management team, directing all of the Walker’s communication efforts, including marketing and promotion, media relations, public information, and audience development both institutionally and for each of the Walker’s curatorial strands.
Responsibilities:
The Director’s primary areas of responsibility are to spearhead the development and implementation of innovative and effective communications efforts focusing on both short- and long-term goals; to successfully promote the Walker regionally, nationally, and globally; to build ongoing public interest and support for Walker programming; to maximize revenues through paid admissions, ticket sales, media sponsorships, and other sources; and to sustain and expand the Walker’s various audiences.
Requirements:
Other requirements include: degree (advanced degree preferred) in marketing, public relations, communications, or related field; 5+ years of experience in marketing/communications, including senior management experience; demonstrated success in planning and conducting major marketing and communications campaigns; facility at developing effective working relationships—internal and external—and implementing non-media-based community relations efforts; knowledge of national arts and audience trends; extensive experience with communications, ideally in a large, high profile organization; excellent research, writing, and organizational skills; excellent public speaking and presentation skills; ability to direct, supervise, and motivate staff—both direct reports and peers across the institution—and facilitate cross-functional efforts; ability to interact effectively with Board members, donors, media, the public, and colleagues at all levels; ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment; and a high level of creativity and entrepreneurship.
Skills:
The ideal candidate will possess extraordinary energy, drive, and vision. Experience within the cultural sector, specifically modern and contemporary visual arts, performing arts, film and media arts is highly desirable, as is a vested interest and history of success using alternative and online approaches to marketing—web-based promotions, social media, relational marketing, and developing innovative partnerships to implement collaborative efforts. Extensive knowledge of contemporary art and artists preferred.
