Description:
Plans, designs, and oversees exhibit design development through construction and installation of permanent and temporary exhibits and displays: Confers with administrative, curatorial, and exhibit staff members to determine theme, content, interpretative or informational purpose, and planned location of exhibit, to discuss budget, promotion, and time limitations, and to plan design and production schedule for fabrication and installation of exhibit components. Familiar with a variety of interpretive/exhibit design concepts, practices, and procedures. Familiar with ADA requirements for the fields of interpretation, graphic design, and exhibitions. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. A degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Reports to owners.
Responsibilities:
The main responsibilities of the exhibit designer are:
• Works with project team to develop creative concepts to address specified client needs.
• Provides art direction, leadership, and coaching to design team.
• Manages design process, in accordance with established schedules and budgets, from concept to project completion.
• Interfaces with full project team to facilitate project flow and success.
• Interfaces with clients through established review processes to ensure that designs meet established objectives.
• Prepares preliminary drawings of proposed exhibit, including detailed construction, layout, and special effect diagrams and material specifications, for final drawing rendition by other personnel, basing design and specifications on knowledge of artistic and technical concepts, principles, and techniques.
• Submits plan for approval, and adapts plan as needed to serve intended purpose or to conform to budget or fabrication restrictions.
• Oversees preparation of artwork and construction drawings of exhibit components to ensure intended interpretation of concepts and conformance to structural and material specifications.
• Arranges for acquisition of specimens or graphics or building of exhibit structures by outside contractors as needed to complete exhibit.
• Inspects installed exhibit for conformance to specifications and satisfactory operation of special effects components.
• Oversees placement of collection objects or informational materials in exhibit framework.
Educational Requirements:
• Must have at least a BA (preferably in fine art and/or design)
Skills:
Must have at least 5 years of practical experience working in the exhibit design field as a designer, with at least 2 years of design management.
• Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously
• Proficient knowledge of environmental graphic design, exhibit construction, lighting, and AV hardware and production
• Software experience should include CS3 Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash) and a 3-D program (preferably 3D Studio Max)
• Must have strong team skills
