The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum: At the center of the African American community in Kansas City, Missouri is the Historic 18th & Vine District. It was here in 1920 that the Negro National League was founded at the Paseo YMCA. In the early 1990’s, local historian and visionary Horace M. Peterson galvanized Kansas City’s black community, business leaders, and former black baseball leagues players around an idea: to build a monument to those who played in the segregated leagues. Founded in 1990, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has maintained Peterson’s vision of celebrating the accomplishments of early black baseball players, and the men and women who contributed to its success. The NLBM provides educational opportunities for children and adults to reconnect with the past, while providing scholars with primary and secondary materials to explore the social, cultural, and economic impact of black baseball on American culture. Over the past ten years, the Museum has had an average attendance of over 50,000 visitors annually and enjoys local, national and international support from individuals, foundations and corporations. The Executive Director: The Executive Director will serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization, will be responsible for the effective leadership, management and operations of the Negro Baseball Leagues Museum, the John “Buck” O’Neil Education and Research Center, and will ensure the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will directly manage a Deputy Director/Chief Curator, a Director of Marketing, and a support staff. The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree or the equivalent in experience (an advanced degree would distinguish the successful candidate); five to ten years of professional experience preferably in museum leadership and organization; service in a role that included reporting to a Board of Directors; experience in marketing, stakeholder relations and philanthropy; strong background in written and verbal communications and facilitation of special events; expertise in budgeting, operations and revenue production; and specific experience in fund development, major gift solicitations, deferred gift strategies and endowment campaigns. Nominations and Applications: Nominations and applications will be held in confidence. Applications should include a letter outlining the applicant’s background, qualifications and vision for the position, curriculum vitae/résumé, and contact information for five professional references.
