Nathaniel Newlin Grist Mill
Nicholas Newlin Foundation

Glen Mills/Concord, Pennsylvania

Type: Full Time, Experienced

Required Degree: Master's

Description:
The Nicholas Newlin Foundation seeks a Foundation Director to replace Dr. H.
Dabbs Woodfin, Jr., Foundation Director since 1983, who will retire in June, 2008.

The Nicholas Newlin Foundation maintains the Nathaniel Newlin Grist Mill Historic Site in Concord, Pennsylvania, which includes a working eighteenth-century grist mill, a miller's house, a mill-owner's house, a blacksmith's shop, several mill-worker's houses and outbuildings, a visitors' center, an archive center, a trout-stocked stream, and 172 acres of woods and fields. The site welcomes 25,000 visitors a year.

The Newlin Foundation Director is charged with carrying out the Foundation's statement of purpose: "The purpose of the Nicholas Newlin Foundation is to preserve its land and historic buildings for the pleasure and education of the public. In an area of urban growth, the Foundation maintains open land as a refuge for plants, animals, birds, and for the people who come to enjoy them. In an era of high technology, it offers visitors insights into the vanished life of the rural eighteenth century. This two-fold objective of environmental and historical concerns is combined into a single theme wherever possible. Following the ideals of its founder, E. Mortimer Newlin, the Foundation will strive to enhance its service to the public, while securing its future by managing its finances wisely."

Responsibilities:
The Newlin Foundation Director is responsible for all aspects of the Foundation's operations. These include the hiring and supervision of staff, financial management and budgeting, developing and implementing public programs, recruiting and supervising volunteers, fundraising, overseeing the development of public and educational programming, inspiring the staff and trustees, and all other activities that arise from leading the Newlin Foundation and its friends and employees to fulfill the Foundation's mission of preservation, education, and service to the community

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
The Director will have the ability to lead the Foundation to fulfill its mission. This ability could arise from a wide variety of professional backgrounds, but the successful candidate's qualifications will be likely to include: significant experience as an administrator, the proven ability to lead and to inspire others, a successful record of writing and public speaking, and a demonstrated commitment to historic and environmental preservation. The Director will be expected to enter fully into and become a leader in the cultural life of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the wider community of mills, millers and mill historians, and should be eager to assume this responsibility.
